Atheana Picha is a Coast Salish artist from the Kwantlen First Nation, and her late grandmother was from the Tsartlip First Nation on Vancouver Island. She carries the name Nash’mene’ta’naht, meaning “go-getter woman,” given to her by Gerry Oldman from St’at’imc First Nation, and carries the name Xwii Xwa, meaning “echo,” given to her by the late Shane Pointe from Musqueam First Nation.
Working across mural painting, printmaking, weaving, carving, engraving, and digital media, Atheana is known for blending traditional Coast Salish design with contemporary public art. Her practice focuses on learning from elders, studying ancestral belongings and historical works, and carrying Coast Salish teachings forward through modern artistic expression.
Her public artworks can be found throughout the Lower Mainland, including murals, banner installations, and large-scale civic art projects. She has also spoken about using public art as a way to create learning opportunities and make Coast Salish stories and design more accessible to broader communities.
